Applications open for agricultural youth council

Young Canadians passionate about the Canadian agriculture and agri-food sector now have a vehicle for effecting change on a national level.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) is looking for young Canadians between the ages of 18 and 30 to serve on the newly created Canadian Agricultural Youth Council. They will “provide advice on new and emerging issues that matter most to the sector, enable on-going dialogue on food-related challenges and opportunities, share information and best practices, and provide advice on the strengths and weaknesses of policies and programs affecting the agriculture and agri-food sectors,” according to the AAFC website.

Looking for broad representation from across the supply chain, applicants should have some background or experiences in the farming and/or food industry, but not necessarily on-farm experience.

“Whether you’re a young farmer taking over the family farm, a student considering a career in agriculture, or someone working in the food and beverage sector, we’re looking for a diverse group of people from across the country who are passionate about sharing their ideas,” AAFC notes. Agri-food processors and agri-business owners are also eligible.

“The young women and men in Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector have a valuable perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing them. I am very proud to be launching the first Canadian Agricultural Youth Council because we need to bring the voices of these young women and men to the table and ensure that they take part in the decisions that affect their future. I want our young leaders to share their vision with us and help implement it,” says Marie-Claude Bibeau, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.
